MPWPC recently caught up with longstanding club member Lyall Hill. Lyall is an ex NZ age-group athlete with Mountfort who this season stepped into a lead role in restarting our men's team with coach Chris Wall. In 2022 Lyall coached our U14 boys to a Div 2 National title and you'll also often catch him refereeing college and club games when time permits.
What got you interested in water polo?
I became interested in water polo after watching my siblings play in a homeschool group coached by Jane Logan and watching my brother play at Mountfort Park. The sport instantly appealed to me, and I started as soon as I had the opportunity.
What are some of the memories of your earlier years at Mountfort Park?
My first tournament was the under 12s Olympic hopefuls tournament. I played for the Mountfort Mavericks with teammates Campbell Hulbert and Jesse Fuemana.
What have been some playing highlights with Mountfort Park?
A highlight at Mountfort Park was playing and witnessing the development of our men's team to compete in the NZ National League in 2020. The first time for the club. Another highlight was being a part of the development of Mountfort Park, becoming a more competitive club in the country.
What were some of the special moments when representing NZ at u18 level?
Representing New Zealand at u18's in Australia was a great experience. It proved to be a special tournament, going undefeated. The team bonded well over the tournament, which showed in our play. It was also great to play with my Mountfort team mate of years, Campbell.
What got you into coaching?
I wanted to give back to the club, sharing the enthusiasm and enjoyment of the game with the players. Witnessing player improvement in ability, team play, and personal development is my main drawcard to coaching. I am pleased to contribute to Mountfort Park's overall growth and success.
What has kept you motivated with the sport?
My motivation in water polo is the enjoyment of the game, fueled by continuously learning new skills, and developing my abilities as a player. The competitive nature of the game adds to the motivation.
What is some advice for our younger players?
My advice is to enjoy the game of water polo. Be excited, eager to learn, and have a positive mindset at practice and games. When you genuinely enjoy the game, it becomes a passion that drives you forward, both as a player and as an individual.
Thanks for making such an awesome contribution to Mountfort Park Water Polo club Lyall!
